The study was undertaken to determine the effects of lactulose syrup on the growth and intestinal microflora of adult rats. Male rats, weight 514 g (at 32 weeks of age), were fed diets containing 0% or 14.2 % lactulose syrup for 25 days. The following results were obtained : 1) The lactulose syrup group showed a decrease in body weight and total feed intake during the 25 days. 2) The lactulose syrup group showed a decrease in the growth ratio, feed efficiency ratio and protein efficency ratio during the 25 days. 3) In the lactulose syrup group, th weight of retroperitoneal fat pads and epididymal fats pads per cacass weight were significant decreases and the weight of cecum with contents per cacass weight was significant increase. 4) In the fatty adid composition of retroperitoneal fat pads, linoleic acid was significant increase and palmitic acid was decreased. 5) In the cecum, pH was significant decrease, and thiamin contents, riboflavin contents and number of Bifidobacterium per 1 g cecum contente were significant increases.
