Abstract

Antibacterial effects of ten dental materials clinically used against Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus casei were examined. Glass-ionomer cements (Fuji Ionomer Type II, Base Cement White, MIRACLEMIX, Vitrebond, Fuji Ionomer LC), polycarboxylate cement (HY-BOND CARBO), zinc phosphate cement (Elite Cement), HY-cement (Hyc TANNIN CEMENT), zinc oxide eugenol cement (EUGEDAIN), and composite resin (Helimolar) were tested. The results were as follows : 1. Against Streptococcus mutans, all cements exhibited antibacterial effects. 2. Against Lactobacillus casei, HY-BOND CARBO, MIRACLEMIX, Vitrebond, Elite Cement, and EUGECAIN exhibited antibacterial effects. 3. Against both Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus casei, Helimolar exhibited antibacterial effect.
