Since the beginning of human civilization, there always been new ideas that counter the currently established ideas. This always marks the shifting of ages, from Romanesque to Gothic to Renaissance, etc. This condition effected many aspects in life such as in social, economy and politic. This leads to the changes of the definition of beauty that also influence the style of architecture, art and landscape architecture. In landscape architecture the shifting of style from one period to another is a common thing. In the 17 century the symmetrical pattern of formal garden is considered beautiful, but a century after that there is a response against it to make a more natural and informal style of garden. Cottage Garden is a typology in landscape Architecture that uses a various plants mixture of ornamental and edible plants. This type of garden became popular at the 19^<th> century in United Kingdom. It is said that Cottage garden style is influenced by the emergence of the "arts and crafts" movement that was carried by John Ruskin,. He promoted to return to the vernacular forms, crafts and eclectic, due to the changes that happen caused by Industrialization. It is also assumed that Cottage garden are also another development of English garden in a much smaller scale because of its informality. From this paper I would like to explore the aspects that trigger the emergence of Cottage Garden style of design and also the reason why this type of garden is considered informal.
