Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to examine how the confidence of leaders (Ikeda & Furukawa, 2005) influences leadership behaviors by using three different complex tasks to clarify individual differences in leadership behaviors. 16 groups of three members each completed a puzzle task in which the level of complexity, in terms of the volume of information, was manipulated (easy, difficult, and impossible conditions). Results showed that leaders with confidence in the "creating a relationship with others" domain, exercised task and relationship-related leader behaviors and influenced group performance. However, confidence in the "performing tasks" domain had no relationship with leader behavior and group performance. These findings suggest which domain of leader's confidence is required in order to exercise effective leadership behavior depend on task characteristics.
