Description
Polymer stabilized SSFLC cells using a ferroelectric liquid crystal doped with photo-curable liquid crystalline monomers have been successfully fabricated. The liquid crystalline polymer network is formed by photo-curing in the SmA phase, and the layer structure in the SmC* phase is studied by X-ray diffraction measurement. From the result, we find that the formed network suppresses to form a chevron layer structure, resulting in formation of a quasi-bookshelf layer structure. Using these techniques, we can obtain the only C1-uniform state without using a high-pretilt aligning film. Furthermore, the utilization of PVCi films for LC alignment is shown to be useful to obtain a uniform alignment.
