Description

Sulfation of various alcohols with phenylsulfuryl chloride (PSC) was carried out and the yields of alkyl hydrogen sulfate produced were compared. Generally, yield of the primary alcohol was found to be more rich than the secondary alcohol, which is better than the tertiary. Nextly, detailed investigations mainly on the reaction products between PSC and ethanol were made and the reaction path presumed were discussed. It was known that a different process path was taken by the different catalysts between pyridine and either NaHCO_3 or Na_2CO_3.
