Abstract

A number of excavated items from the site of Nakijin Castle clearly reveal that the ruling clan occupying the castle prior to the advent of a unified kingdom in Okinawa consisted of a highly sophisticated militant group of men of foreign origin. Among the excavated items relating to life, religion, military equipment, entertainment, ornament and so forth which suggest their distinct connection with the Yuan period, there exists the image of a Christian cross drawn on a piece of porcelain. This paper traces its origin and background from the stand point of an equestrian people of Iranian stock called As who were Christians and played a significant military role as well in southern China throughout the Yuan Era.
