Description

Physical contact (PC) connection is a butt jointing technique for optical fibers, in which fiber cores are brought into direct contact with the polished endfaces by using axial compression force. We have been studying about the PC connection which joins a cleaved single-mode optical fiber endface to a polished fiber endface installed in the PC connector, because the cleaved fiber endface can be obtained easier than the polished fiber endface. In this report, we reveal the relationship between the breaking stress of a fiber and the shape of the cleaved fiber endface. We also derive the fiber cleaving condition appropriate for PC connection. We successfully achieved a PC connection with return loss of more than 51.6 dB by considering our cleaving condition.
