Description

Demand for the high definition video is increasing, and improving compression performance is desired. Under such circumstances, H.265 with improved compression performance to twice from H.264 has attracted attention. However, the complexity of the process is greatly increased and one cannot get the sufficient encoding speed. The speed up of motion estimation process that accounts for most of the process is essential. TZSearch built into the reference software of H.265 is one of the search algorithm with high acculacy and efficiency. However, TZSearch is not enough to meet the requirements of hsmall computation complexity. Therefore, we proposed a motion estimation algorithm with two effective techniques. One technique is setting the expanding range of diamond search pattern ristricted by the distance from the current search center to next search center. Another technique is usage of the sub-sampled image at the distant search point. We implemented the proposed algorithm on the reference software. As a result, the algorithm reduces 60% of SAD operations and improve memory access efficiency by 35% compared to TZSearch in the condition of minimizin the deterioration of compression ratio and video quality.
