The study was undertaken to determine the effects lactulose syrup on growth of young rats. Male wistar rats weight 240g (at 9 weeks of age), were fed diet containing 0 %, 9.5%, 19% lactulose syrup for 34 days. The following results were obtained : 1) The faecal state 28 days was soft in the 19% lactulose syrup group. The body weight for 34 days in two lactulose syrup groups were lower than in the control group. 2) The retroperitoneal fat pads in two lactulose syrup groups were lower than in tne control group. 3) The feed efficiency ratio, protein efficency ratio and energy efficiency ratio were lower in two lactulose syrup groups than in the control group. Apparent nitrogen absorptibility was low level in the 19% lactulose syrup group. 4) Lipids (%) of liver were lower in two lactulose syrup groups than in the control group. 5) In the cecum, total weight and total thiamin were increased in two lactulose syrup groups. And total riboflavin was increased in the 19% lactulose syrup group. These effects were higher in the 19% group than in the 9.5% group.
