Description

In a 48-year-old man admitted to hospital with a one-month history of cough and dyspnea, chest X-ray disclosed complete collapse of the left lung due to left spontaneous pneumothorax. Treated three times by thoracentesis, the lung indicated no signs of reexpanding, and the patient was consequently transfered to Nakano National Chest Hospital. Thoracic drainage effected reexpansion to about one-third the pleural cavity; however, persistent air leakage preclured further expansion. Partial lobectomy, although performed two months after the collapse of the lung, enabled reexpansion of the lung without any complications, and the patient was discharged from hospital on the 18th day after the operation.
