Description

The origin of "Meijiza" is the street play (performed by three brothers) at Nishi-Ryogoku hirokoji around 1850s (around the end of Edo period), which had developed as"Kishoza"(street playhouse). In Edo period, official playhouses permitted by Emperor wereonly three; "Nakamuraza", "Ichimuraza",and "Moritaza", which were called "Edo Sanza". In other words, predecessor of "Meijiza" was based on official playhouses permitted by Emperor. However, in 1872(year five of Meiji period), these imperial street playhouses in Tokyo were renamed as "Tokyo Jiuza" by the law of city of Tokyo. Based on this law, in 1873(year 6 of Meiji period), "Kishoza", which was mentioned in the paragraph above, was reestablished at Hisamatsu-cho coast in Nihonbashi area. Over the period, this "Kishoza" was renamed as "Hisamatsuza", "Chitoseza" and finally it became "Meijiza" in 1893(year 26 of Meiji period).Since "Edo Sanza" was already lay in ruins from Meiji period to the beginning of Showaperiod and except for "Meijiza", "Tokyo Jiuza" were already ruined as well, "Meijiza" in Nihonbashi became the oldest playhouse in Tokyo as of today. In this paper, author would like to clarify through the establishing process to managing/operational approach of playhouses in Edo period and go over the historicaltransition of playhouses, mainly in terms of management perspective of "Meijiza". Finallyauthor would examine the management perspective of "Meijiza" in modern age.
