Description

On Nanshin-ron and Asia-shugi of the middle meiji Era there are two different views which divide Japanese historians. According to the one view Nanshin-ron and Asia-shugi are based on completely different ideas from each other. Following the other, on the contrary, both ideas share the same ideological origin. In spite of this apparently striking contrast, however, these views have a defect in common that they do not deeply enough go into the detailed analysis of the theoretical construction of Nanshin-ron and Asia-shugi. For this purpose we should begin by reserching how both were connected to each other in their historical development. The precise insight into their interrelationship enables us to understand the whole constellation in which they were born and worked. In this article the author deals with SUGANUMA Tadakaze and FUKUMOTO Nichinan, because they were both personifying the coexistence of Nanshin-ron and Asia-shugi in the single personality; In their books they urged Japanese people to subdue the Philippine Islands in order to transform them into Japanese colonies. Studied are such issues as what combined Nanshin-ron and Asia-shugi into consistency in the colonization theory by both theoreticians, taking into sufficiant consideration what they had in common as well as where they differed from each other. Through this study the auther wishes to contribute to the scholarly discussion on Nanshin-ron and Asia-shugi of the middle Meiji Era.
