Description

A poly (p-phenylene vinylene), derivative substituted with a long side chain containing alkoxybiphenyl mesogenic unit, poly (2-methoxy, 5-(4-decyloxy-bipheny-4'-(1, 10-dioxydecane))-p-phenylene vinylene), MDBD-PPV has been newly synthsized and its electrical and optical properties have been studied. A liquid-crystalline molecular alighnment and layer structure have been confirmed by optical microscope observation and X-ray diffraction measurement, respectively. The dielectric constant changes in a stepwise manner at phase transition temperature. The bandgap of MDBD-PPV in the liquid-crystalline phase has been evaluated to be about 2.3 eV, which monotonously dectreases with decreasing temperature. The photoluminescence peak was observed at around 560 nm, which corresponds to the emission originating from the MDBD-PPV main chain. The electroluminescent device has been fabricated using this liquid-crystalline polymer and it has been found that the emission spectra depend on the polarity of applied voltage.
