The Yakṣa Cult in Mathurā during the Saka- Kushan Period

抄録

The city of Mathurā prospered as the political and economic center duringthe Saka-Kushan period. The economic prosperity, especially under theKushans, provided a safe cradle for various religious activities, likeJainism, Buddhism, Brahmanism, Hinduism, etc. In this small paper, wewish to take up the Yakṣa cult which originally developed from the awe theancient people held for the power of life in trees. Many Yakṣa and Yakṣiṇīsculptures and reliefs were found in Mathurā. By studying these Yakṣaimages, especially in the Mathurā Archeological Museum, by classifyingthem into major stylistic groups, and by describing the details of the examplesof the each of the groups, we try to get some information on the natureof the Yakṣa cult at that time.
