Description
The outer bark of P. densiflora was examined for the percentage extractives from it (Table 1.).
The benzene soluble wax from the outer bark was saponified with hot alcoholic KOH, and separated into each component (Fig. 1). Main components isolated in crystaline forms were lignoceric acid 52.4%, hydroxy palmitic acid 5.4%, lignoceryl alcohol 11.6%, and a phytosterol 1.7%, yield based on the oven-dry weight of the wax. Thus, it was clarified that the benzene soluble wax was composed of mainly lignoceric acid and lignoceryl alcohol.
The ether extract from the wax-free outer bark contained possibly dihydroquercetin, but its amount was considered to be a very small.
The outer bark was extracted with benzene, alcohol, and hot water, and the extractive-free outer bark was saponified with hot alcoholic KOH (Fig. 2). A hydroxy acid (about C23) 1.23%, hydroxy palmitic acid 0.21%, and lignoceryl alcohol 0.08% were obtained in crystaline forms, yield based on the oven-dry weight of extractive-free outer bark.
This indicates that the extractive-free cork was containing about 2% of wax which could not be extracted.
