Description

This study investigates the causal relationship between nursing students' self-care behavior and factors that influence, to provide them with educational advice. Olem and Underwoods theory was the self-care concept used in the survey questionnaire, which was given in July 1995. This study incorporated revisions of the scales of previous studies. The following results are culled from the responses of 93 1st-graders and 98 3rd-graders of our nursing college. Grades, family presence, cognition of threats, awareness of health norms, self-esteem, and coping with emotional behavior influenced their self-care behavior. Such behavior was accelerated by awareness of the importance of self-care and aggressive behavior to cope with stress, but this acceleration was ameliorated according to the priority of daily activity. Education providing vital self-care knowledge and improving self-respect is necessary; in addition, an educational environment that gives physical and moral support is very important to maintaining self-care activity.
