Description
Current technological developments and future experimental plans for space laser communications are described. Based on the recent technologies, such as Er-doped fiber amplifiers developed for groundbased fiber optic communications in the early 90's, several proposals for multi-gigabit space laser communication systems are appeared recently including the operational laser communication links between low-earth orbiting satellites for mobile or fixed satellite communications. In this paper, major study items for the operational laser communication system are discussed and the enabling technologies studied and developed at the Communications Research Laboratory are proposed.
