Description

In the preceding number (No. 242), I gave a general description of the eight Dōbuku handed down in the Uesugi family, with a detailed explanation of (2) Dōbuku, red silk, covered with embroidery of snow-covered willows, Tsujiga hana-zome collar. In this number are described in detail the fol lowing three Dōbuku : (3) Dōbuku in white figured silk with paulownia pattern, embroidered collar.(4) Dōbuku in white figured silk with peony and vine pattern, embroidered collar. (5) Dōbuku in pale blue figured silk with bamboo and sparrow pattern, Surihaku collar. (3) Dōbuku, white figrued silk, paulownia pattern, embroidered collar. (P1. Ⅱ,a, Illustrations 7-10,14) The collar is of red Nerinuki embroidered with willows and chrysanthemums. On the facing we find 15 different designs in embroidery, as seen in illustrations 7-10, and P1. Ⅱ,a. Colours used in the embroidery are green, yellow-green, white, purple, blue, dark blue, pale blue, salmon pink, pink, pale pink, dark gold, greenish yallow, and yellow. The garment is lined with red Nerinuki (a type of flat weave silk), and padded with silk wool. Length 122 cm. Weight 880g. (4) Dōbuku, white figured silk, peony and vine pattern, embroidered collar. (P1. Ⅱ,b, Illustrations 15, 17) The collar is of red Nerinuki and embroidered with designs such as those shown in P1. Ⅱb and Illustr. 15. Colours used are salmon pink in pale and dark tones, pale pink, green, greenish yellow, yellow, and white. This Dōbuku is lined with purple silk. The collar is also liened with the same purple silk. The germent is padded with silk wool. Length 101.3cm. Weight 755g.(5) Dōbuku, pale blue figured silk, bamboo and sparrow pattern, Surihaku collar. (P1. I, Illustrations 18-20) The bamboo and sparrow medallion pattern woven into the silk is brought out in relief by embroidery in seven parts of the garment. Colours used are salmon pink, pale pink, yaellow, green, yellow-green, brown, white, dark blue, and dark green. The collar is of red Nerinuki on which the designs are applied in Surihaku of silver and gold, and also hand painted in black, red and white. The garment is lined with red Nerinuki, but unpadded Length 123.5cm, Weight 440g. In the next number we sall examine Dōbuku (6) and (7).
