Description

The objective of our research is constructing the system to support L2-English learners for Japanese native speakers. In this report, we focused on a vocal tract shape at utterance. We estimated the vocal tract shape by using the extraction method of vocal tract area function (VTAF), and analyzed the relationship between VTAF and actual vocal tract shape. In this paper, we were compared the logarithm vocal tract area functions (LVTAF) of English consonant phonemes /l/ and In whose difference is regarded as difficult to discern for Japanese native speaker. As a result, decreasing trend of the LVTAF of In was found in the segment 4-7 cm apart form the lips. This trend corresponds to backward movement of the tongue at utterance of /r/. On the other hand, consistent trend of the LVTAF of /l/ was not identified. This implies that estimating vertical tongue movement by use of the VTAF extraction method is less accurate.
