Hypoxic induction of hemoglobin synthesis in Daphnia magna

Description

1. 1. The ability of Daphnia magna to synthesize hemoglobin (Hb) was studied in detail under conditions of controlled oxygen pressure. 2. 2. Immature animals (1.5mm body size) were found most capable of Hb synthesis. 3. 3. The rate of Hb synthesis at an external oxygen pressure of 16 torr was higher than that at 36 torr. 4. 4. At 36–42 torr and a carbon monoxide pressure of 15 torr, Hb was continuously synthesized, reaching 104mg/g dry wt after 6 days. At this oxygen pressure without carbon monoxide, a maximum concentration of 75 mg Hb/g dry wt was attained after 3 days. 5. 5. The differences in Hb concentrations of animals reared at various oxygen pressures with and without CO were significant when the oxygen pressure was below approx. 40 torr. 6. 6. The percentage of oxyHb in vivo decreased at an external oxygen pressure of approx. 50 torr or less, and 50% at 17 torr.
