Impulse signal generator based on current-mode excitation and transmission line resonator

Description

This paper reports a novel wideband pulse generator implemented in CMOS flipped on a quartz substrate, for low power and low duty cycle applications. The proposed circuit is based on a current-mode excitation as opposed to a typical voltage-mode excitation, allowing the exciter size to be smaller. The new architecture reduces loss from the parasitic capacitance of the excitation circuit, so as to increase the energy conversion efficiency. A design methodology for a target oscillation frequency and Q factor is discussed. Three prototypes designed for the same 12 GHz oscillation frequency with different design parameters are fabricated. Measurement results show the energy conversion efficiency of 3.13 %, with the energy consumption of 1.06 pJ/pulse.
