ABSTRACT We have measured the polarization degree of the B Is exciton emission from h-BN under resonance excitation using amultilayer rotating analyzer. We used a Mo/C I 0 1 layers in total as a soft-x-ray polarizer. The emission would include theluminescence component due to the direct recombination of the core exciton and the elastic (Rayleigh) scattering of theincident light. We have found a definite contribution ofthe recombination luminescence to the exciton emission peak. 1. II'TRODUCTION Soft-x-ray (SXR) absorption spectra ofmany insulators exhibit a sharp feature at the absorption threshold, which has beenassigned to the core exciton, a localized state in which the excited electron is bound to the core hole. When the insulators areexcited by the core-exciton absorption, they show an intense emission peak at the same spectral energy, which has beenexplained in terms of the direct recombination of the core exciton. The emission would inevitably include the elastic(Rayleigh) scattering and the diffuse scattering due to surface roughness. However, it has not been made clear to what
