Description

Ground-based, optical monitoring of the NO2 column density and aerosol optical thickness is described. The instrument consists of a solar radiation spectrometer (SRS) and a conventional sunphotometer, both mounted on the same sun- tracker and operated automatically. From daytime measurements in Chiba, Japan during 1998 - 2000, variations of NO2 and aerosol are analyzed. A correlation coefficient between NO2 and aerosol is larger than 0.90 in winters. Because of the capability of simultaneous, real time measurement, this method is particularly suitable for air pollution studies in city areas.© (2001) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering.
