Last-Engaged Thread-Height Reduction of Pin Increases Fatigue Life of Drill Collar

説明

ABSTRACT
Most drill collar fatigue failure occurs in the last-engaged thread (LET) of the pin. This type of failure is because of the concentration of thread loading in this area. As a method to decrease the load concentration, the LET thread height reduction is presented in this paper. Firstly, the effectiveness of the LET height reduction was verified using finite element analysis. Secondly, the analytical results were supported using full-size fatigue tests. Finally, the practicability of the redesigned connection was confirmed through torsional test, make-and- break test and full-size tensile test.
