A study of the elastic property at low temperature in the metal–insulator transition compound

Abstract We have performed ultrasonic measurements on the filled skutterudite compound PrRu 4 P 12 at temperatures down to 0.5 K. A characteristic softening towards low temperature was observed in elastic constants C 11 , ( C 11 - C 12 ) / 2 and C 44 . A further decrease of the softening seems to be expected in the further low temperature in all the elastic constants. We will show the elastic behavior at the low temperatures, and discuss them based on the 4f ground state of Pr ion split by the crystalline electric field effect.
