The separation of picenes in coal liquid obtained from the mild hydrogenation of Shin-Yubari coal

Abstract Mixed crystals obtained from the coal hydrogenation liquid of Shin-Yubari bituminous coal were analysed by h.p.l.c. Each picene derivative in the crystals was well separated and, where possible, examined using u.v., i.r. and m.s. analyses. Picene, monomethylpicenes, dimethylpicenes and trimethylpicene were found.
