Development of a Small Scale Catalytic Combustor for TPV Generation System
Description
Several geometric types of small scale catalytic combustors applying the pallet catalysts as both the heat source and the emitter for generating and controlling infrared ray were developed in order to investigate the catalytic combustion phenomena and the effective operation conditions for TPV generation system. Direct image observation, temperature measurements and exhaust gas analyses showed that it was useful for the improvement of the combustion efficiency to supply the premixed gas of fuel and air into high temperature area of the combustor. The ultraviolet and visible spectral measurement showed that the surface chemical reaction was predominant in the catalytic combustion and the gas phase reaction which causes higher temperature and higher reaction rate than those of the surface reaction did not occur in the developed combustor. The NIR spectral measurement showed that our proposed concept was applicable to the TPV generation system and the pellet catalysts in the combustor could play a role of an emitter for the TPV generation system.
