Abstract The gas chromatographic behavior of fifteen kinds of valerian sesquiterpenoids was investigated using SE-30 and DEGS as stationary liquid phases. The relationship between the presence of hydrogen bonding in the chemical structure and its effect on the retention time is discussed. The present method will distinguish between various valerian oils and be useful for chemotaxonomical research into valerianaceous plants.
