Superconductivity and phase transitions in phosphorus-arsenic alloy under high pressures

Abstract Phosphorus-arsenic alloys with composition P 1−x As x (x: 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6) were prepared at high temperatures and pressures. The phase transitions, the semiconductor to metal transition and the superconductivity in the alloys have been studied at high pressures. An orthorhombic form of P 0.95 As 0.05 underwent reversible transformation to successively denser rhombohedral and simple cubic forms at high pressures. The transition pressure rised several GPas compared with that of black phosphorus. The semiconductor to metal transition was observed in the orthorhombic phase of P 0.7 As 0.3 at around 2.2 GPa. When the alloys were pressurized at 4.2 K, the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) reached to about 10 K at 25 GPa. The Tc is lower than that of black phosphorus.
