Abstract Recording and readout properties of PRIZ spatial light modulator in photorefractive Bi12SiO20 crystal have beeninvestigated. Modulation efficiency of polarization of read out beam with the modulator via electro-optic effect istheoretically estimated by the effective electro-optic coefficient. By using the modulation efficiency, the spatialdifferentiation of input patterns along a selected direction can be carried out experimentally in real time. 1. Introduction Spatial light modulators (SLM) with photorefractive crystal have continually received much attention in the last two decades, because they are used for image converters in optical image processing systems as well as for devices whichstore the inputdata to be processed for subsequent optical 1 There aremany candidate SLM devices with photorefractive material. In this paper, we restrict our present attention to only one such PRIZ spatial light modulator withBi12SiO20 (BSO) crystal, because its dynamical property and its function are unusual and the basicparameters are considerably superior to those ofother devices.2'3 In addition, it's a reason that BSO crystal is characterized by relativelylarge Electro-Optic (EO) coefficientand fast response time. So, recording and readout properties of PRIZ in BSO crystal have been investigated. Modulationefficiency as a function of polarization direction of read out beam with PRIZ via EO effect is theoretically estimated by theeffective scalar EO coefficient4, which depends on the direction of thespace charge field in the crystal and polarization stateof the readout beams for PRIZ. It is shown that the spatial differential of input patterns with respect to a selected directioncan be carried out experimentally in real time by using the dependence of the modulation efficiency in PRIZ on the read-outbeam polarization.
