Effect of Main Flow Pressure Asymmetry on Seal Characteristics of a Gas Turbine Rotor-Stator System
Description
The effect of circumferential pressure asymmetry of the main flow on sealing characteristics of a shrouded rotor-stator system has been studied.
Local distribution of seal efficiency was measured using a tracer gas method. Blocks of various height were placed in the main flow path to generate circumferential pressure asymmetry. The range of main flow static pressure asymmetry (the ratio of difference between maximum and minimum pressure to main flow dynamic pressure) was 2% to 38%.
The test results showed that pressure asymmetry of main flow has a dominant effect on seal efficiency, and local distribution of seal efficiency is strongly correlated with pressure asymmetry. An experimental correlation of mean seal efficiency and pressure asymmetry was obtained.
