Electron-induced cascade showers in lead, copper, and aluminium

説明

Cascade showers induced by 600 MeV and 1000 MeV electrons have been studied in lead. copper and aluminium, with X-ray films inserted between absorber plates. The application of photographic films for the investigation of shower properties has the following advantages. First, the film thickness is quite thin so that it gives little effect on the homogeneity of the absorber plates. Second, they enable us to make an overall observation of the shower behaviour by single exposure. The observed lateral and longitudinal distributions of energy loss in the shower are compared with the shower theory under the approximationB. To determine the efficiency of a total-absorption-type detector, the fraction of the incident energy escaping from the surface of the cylinders, or that from the bottom of the cylinders can be calculated from our data. The results are also compared with the Monte Carlo calculations as well as with the data obtained by other workers.
