PUBLIC OPINION ON VARIOUS ASPECTS OF 2004 TSUNAMI DISASTER

Frequency of natural disasters of significant magnitude is becoming high in all over the world. For Sri Lankans, natural disasters are not uncommon as nearly 30 valuable lives per year are lost due to natural disasters. Landslides, floods, cyclones are common types of natural disasters experience by Sri Lankans until the recent past. Though earthquakes of smaller magnitude were reported few times in Sri Lanka, tsunami was a new experience to many Sri Lankans until 26.12.2004. Tsunami occured due to an earthquake of magnitude 9.0 richter scale triggered closer to Sumathra took nearly 270,000 valuable lives in few Asian countries. Contribution from Sri Lanka was more than 40,000. As it is a new experience and the engineering applications proved the inability to prevent damages fully, an attempt was made in the present paper to investigate how Sri Lankans respond to a natural disaster based on a questionnaire. Results of feed back from nearly 600 eye witnesses or victims of 2004 tsunami disaster is reported in this paper.
