Abstract The lactone formed in the reaction of tetrahydro-2,2,3,5,5-pentamethyl-3-furanol with pyruvic acid has been shown to be 2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-3-hydroxy-α,2,2,3,5,5-hexamethylfuranacrylic acid lactone (IV).
