Characterization of the focal planes of a mass spectrometer using the method of transfer matrices

Abstract Recent development of the position-sensitive microchannel plate detector re-established the value of the mass spectrograph because of the increased detection efficiency. In order to use a channel plate detector most efficiently, it must be set at the optimum position. The position and shape of the focal plane have been calculated using both a ray-tracing method and a transfer matrix method. It was found that the latter gives sufficient information concerning the character of the focal plane.
