Radioactivation analysis studies of polymerization reactions: (1) Solution polymerization of styrene by radical catalysis
Search this article
Description
Abstract Radioactivation analysis was used to detect trace amounts of solvent fragments attached to polymer chain ends in a study of the mechanism of chain transfer to solvent in the polymerization of styrene in chloroform, methylene dichloride, ethylene dichloride and bromobenzene. The polymerization was carried out at 60°C with α,α'-azo bis isobutylonitrile as initiator. It was confirmed that the fragments of solvent molecule, even with bromobenzene as solvent, became attached to the polymer during the course of the transfer reaction. This is in accordance with the generally accepted mechanisms of the transfer reaction.
