Impulse Generation by Nd:YAG Laser Ablation of Aluminum

説明

The ambient-pressure dependence of the ablation pressure and the energy conversion efficiency from the laser pulse energy to the blast wave energy is investigated irradiating a Nd:YAG laser (wave length: 1.06 µm, pulse duration: 15 ns) onto an aluminum foil using the VISAR(Velocity Interferometer System for Any Reflector). As a result, the ablation pressure is not influenced by the ambient pressure though the energy conversion efficiency increases with the increase in the ambient pressure. The confinement of the ablation plume expansion by the ambient air results in the efficient energy conversion from laser to blast wave.
