Abstract The magnetoelastic effect in Laves phase compounds (Gd1−xYx)Co2 in the ferrimagnetic state is very remarkable because the Co moment induced by the exchange field from Gd gives rise to a large magnetovolume effect. The pressure shift of the Curie temperature is about -2 K/kbar, being comparable with that of GdCo2. These results are consistent with the phase diagram associated with itinerant electron metamagnetism.
