Performance characterization of amplitude modulated harmonically mode-locked Er/sup 3+/ doped fiber ring laser

Description

The characteristics of amplitude modulated harmonically mode locked (AM-HML) erbium doped fiber (EDF) ring laser are reported. It is investigated that the AM-HML method can provide a precise control of the lasing spectral bandwidth. The optical spectral bandwidth is found to be broadened from /spl sim/5 GHz to /spl sim/16.6 GHz when the AM modulating low harmonic signal frequency is varied from /spl sim/3.1609 MHz to /spl sim/44.2526 MHz (1 to 14 times of the fundamental cavity frequency f/sub a/) at a fixed pulse rate of f/sub h/ /spl sim/2.1241 GHz without affecting the stability. The control of the spectral bandwidth can provide a precise control of the nonlinear effects in single mode fibers, such as stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in optical communications.
