Mobile localization using local scattering model in multipath environments

Estimating the position of mobile-terminals is a key requirement for many wireless applications. In this paper, we propose an approach to mobile-terminal positioning using a single array antenna in multipath environments. Using a local scattering model, we considered two parameters that characterize propagation environments: the direction of arrival and the degree of scattering related to the angular spread of received signals. The position of a mobile-terminal can be determined by combining the estimated parameters with the results of ray tracing analysis using highly accurate 3D terrain data. When we applied the proposed method to experimental data, the accuracy was evaluated compared with the E-911 requirement, and the effectiveness of using the two parameters was also considered.
