A Trial Development Of A Map Data Base System For The Blind

It is necessary to develop a system that helps the blind acquire the prior knowledge of an environment to realize their independent movement. Now we are engaged in developing a map data base system for the blind using multimedia such as tactile and verbal information. First, this paper presents system specifications : artificial reality via multi-modality, bidirectional communication, hiemhical representation of map information, etc.. Next, recognition of rough maps and bidirectional canmunication, which have been completed as important functions of the system, are described.
