Caregiver Support System for Nursing Care for Older Adults

説明

In a so-called super aging society such as Japan, a serious problem faced is that of achieving effective and high-quality care support for older adults. This study focusses on the psychological aspect and sleep problems related to this issue. We propose a system for decreasing the burden of care on caregivers. Specifically, we aim to actualize a system that periodically checks the sleeping situation of older adults, gives suggestions or advice when they have difficulty sleeping, and controls the room environment, such as illumination and air conditioning. Thus, this study addresses the following three research issues: A. Learning mechanism of an individual’s sleep state, B. Conversation control to enable a care recipient to undertake behavior modifications leading to improvement in sleep, C. Information-sharing mechanism to foster mutual understanding and acceptance between the care recipient, caregiver, and related people. This paper presents our research concept, scheme, and approach, as well as a discussion of their significance based on results of field experiments and simulations.
