説明
A 20-year-old Japanese male with a progressive hearing impairment of seven years' duration in both ears underwent stapedectomy of the left ear under diagnosis of otosclerosis. His father previously received a fenestration operation in both ears resulting in temporary restoration of his hearing. The removed stapes footplate was studied histologically and showed very active and highly vascular changes with an increase in size and number of the marrow spaces where osteoclastic giant cells and osteoblasts were numerous. The otosclerotic lesion was thought to be located primarily in the stapes footplate itself. Chromosomal studies of the patient and his father showed normal karyograms.
