Melting layer observation by the broad band radar(BBR)

説明

We developed the Broad Band Radar(BBR) at Osaka Prefecture Univ. It's transmit power, center frequency and bandwidth are 500mW, 15.75GHz and 80MHz respectively. Since the BBR is vertical pointing, the radar show only a vertical profile. But the radar which use pulse compression technique with chirp signals, archived good time-space resolution, typically 7 m by 2s. In addition to the radar is a Doppler radar. We observed the rain event by the BBR in Apr. 3 2005, which last between 18:00 - 17:00 JST. We observed this melting layer by the Doppler spectrum of the BBR in this rain and bright band. Also, fine structure in rain profile was observed by the BBR. The BBR observed groups of large drop. At same time, Micro Rain Radar (MRR), 24.2GHz FM-CW radar, observed the rain locate 3m away from the BBR. Doppler spectrum of BBR is in accord width one of MRR at low altitude. Because the BBR can resolve signal of the fine structure, we show that the BBR system is useful for a observation of small scale and short time fluctuation of meteorological phenomena.
