Objectives: Epidemiological surveys are essential for the development of proposals for actions which are appropriate to their needs and to enable comparisons for the assessment of the impact of these actions. The aim of this retrospective study was to conduct an epidemiological survey of Urgency Dental Service of School of Dentistry, University of Sao Paulo (USP) in order to determine the number of patients, clinical procedures, appointments, frequency of each patient’s appointment in this urgency dental service and sociodemographic characteristics (gender, age, ethnicity, profession, marital status, city and neighborhood). Methods: Data for the period of 5.5 years (2008/jane2013/jul) were registered by the Information Technology System of Clinics, University of Sao Paulo (ROMEU System). Results: The number of patients who sought service in this period was of 29,924. There were 165,183 clinical procedures performed in 51,570 appointments, with an annual average of 5,440 patients, 30,033 clinical procedures and 9,376 appointments. On average 3 clinical procedures were performed in each patient per appointment. There was a predominance of patients who sought the service only once (75.18%), females (58.11%), between 30e39 years old (20.80%), Caucasians (71.57%), students (18.79%), single people (62.71%), residents of Sao Paulo (80.16%) and nearby neighborhoods (61.56%). The most frequent clinical procedures that were performed were those resulting from caries and sequelae such as temporary sealing and pulpectomy. Conclusions: In order to reduce the incidence of caries and their sequelae it is important that methods of caries prevention may be enhanced in both individual and public health levels.
