Abstract Infrared and Raman spectra of 1T polytype TiSe 2 , TaS 2 and TaSe 2 are investigated with particular interest in the phonon modes observed in the commensurate superlattice states. In TiSe 2 , the experimental results suggest that hybridization takes place among the Γ-point phonon modes which are folded back from the A, L and M points of the Brillouin zone of the undistorted lattice, and that the Raman intensities and IR oscillator strength are distributed among these modes as a result of the hybridization. On the other hand, in TaS 2 the phonons in the low energy region are found to have large intensities. In this case, the explanation due to CDW collective excitations may give a proper account for the optical activities of the observed phonons.
