Abstract 1. 1. Amounts of adenine nucleotides during the development in the eggs and embryos of the sea urchins, Anthocidaris crassispina and Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus , were estimated by enzymatic methods. 2. 2. In Anthocidaris eggs, level of ATP increased gradually after fertilization and reached a peak in the mesenchymal blastula stage (at 18 hr of fertilization), then the level declined rapidly following gastrulation. Slight changes in ADP and AMP levels were also observed in the course of development. 3. 3. Content of ATP in Hemicentrotus eggs decreased during a period from the cleavage stage (at 3 hr of fertilization) to the swimming blastula stage (at 12 hr of fertilization). Then the ATP level maintained until the prism stage (at 36 hr of fertilization) and decreased thereafter. ADP content increased slightly around the gastrula stage but AMP level remained a constant during early development. 4. 4. Values of the energy charge in developing eggs of both sea urchins were mostly constant.
