Abstract A new simplified finite element method for the elastic-plastic analysis of plate bending is developed from the general simplified method which the authors have proposed. Plastic nodal displacement increments of an element are derived from the yield condition as plastic potential expressed in terms of the nodal forces based on the flow rule of plasticity. Thus, the elastic-plastic stiffness matrix can be obtained without numerical integration over the domain of the element, unlike the conventional finite element method, once the elastic stiffness matrix is derived through either the displacement model or the assumed-stress hybrid model. Numerical solutions for the elastic-plastic bending problem of circular and rectangular plates demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the present finite element method compared with the conventional finite element method and the results of the limit analysis.
