Abstract This paper presents the theoretical description of emf in a nonisotherma and convective system, with experimental data demonstrating its appropriateness. In a thermodynamic consideration, approach by Forland and Ratkje was chosen since their approach is thermodynamically rigorous, and the experiments have been carried out in an aqueous AgNO 3 system. The experimental results indicate that emf measured in a nonisothermal and convective system is mainly due to the so-called thermogalvanic cell.
